The "Listening Sessions" held by the DLNR in Hilo, Waimea and Kona were well attended considering the short notice we received and all of the other events that were taking place on the Big Island November 5th.
The impact of the "listening sessions" is unclear. From feedback we received and recognizing that our perspective is biased, we would have to say the presentation by DLNR Chairman Aila drew mixed reviews at best.
Chairman Aila did indicate that the first of several projects at Honokohau are scheduled to begin "before the end of November. He indicate that approximately $5 million dollars will be spent completing those projects.
One of the projects that will be taken on is the repair of the lighting system. Our question has been for some time . . .why not use those funds to invest in a solar "green lighting system" that will significantly cut electric costs for the harbor? Chairman Aila's response to questions about the "Green Lighting" proposal sent to him and the Governor in February were not consistent with the facts regarding the proposal presented to him and the requirements of such a proposal given that the project is under control of the State. Our question now is. . . did he study it, or simply reject it?
A pump-out station is one of the several requests we have repeatedly made to the DLNR. At the "listening session" we learned that Chairman Aila is waiting to hear from the boating community for its recommendation as to where to locate it. We were not aware that he was waiting for us, but now that we know, we will proceed with providing a recommendation.
